Lifelong support is key, says new AV/IT 'Consortium'

Aage Hempel Netherlands, Tijssen Elektro and e3 Systems have unveiled The Consortium, a tripartite strategic partnership that will allow all three companies to offer a comprehensive AV and IT service ‘from concept to cruising’.

Speaking exclusively to SuperyachtNews.com about the announcement, e3’s group managing director, Roger Horner said that the new triumvirate would be able to handle the technical demands of a superyacht throughout its lifecycle because of their complementary expertise. As Horner said, “it’s better to be a master of one than a jack of all trades.”

Whilst e3’s speciality is communications integration and solutions, Tijssen is an electrical integrator specialising in machinery monitoring systems. And intriguingly for grupoarbulu-owned e3 and Aage Hempel, the company has an established presence in the healthy Dutch superyacht new build market. Aage Hempel themselves are relatively new on the superyacht scene, but bring with them a portfolio of NavComms and bridge integration provisions that includes the Maersk fleet. In Horner’s words, “they have a first-time fix rate that the superyacht industry would lust after. In the field it’s a 97 per cent hit rate.”

Horner explained that previous partnerships had not produced the success he had hoped because there was no cohesion between the service providers in the eyes of the project manager. This time however, if one of the three companies is approached, they will act as the face of the project, liaising with their partners behind the scenes, minimising the points of contacts that the client is faced with.

Whether this loose affiliation will work in practice is yet to be seen, but the theory – first proposed by Tijssen to e3 and Aage Hempel – is that ones-top service provisions can be outperformed by three specilaists working under one banner.

The quality and extent of after-sales service is one of the most pertinent topics in yachting, and the lack thereof is one of the most common complaints among owners. Horner believes the ‘concept to cruising’ service promise will play a pivotal role in the Consortium’s success. Furthermore, the geographical breadth of the companies’ front-line operations – the Netherlands, UK and Spain –will ensure that the time yachts spend out of the water is minimised.

“Typically a new build company is working on six boats a year, and the sooner they can get rid of the yacht once it’s launched, the better”, Horner said. “They’re not set up to provide support through helpdesks whereas a front-line support service such as ourselves as a help desk and remote locations.” Ordinarily these two types of companies remain distinct, said Horner, but the Consortium “overlaps these structures.”
