The leading source of data, commentary and insight on the superyacht industry, The Superyacht Annual Report, is now out.

The Superyacht Annual Report is the most comprehensive and studiously researched analysis of the superyacht market, compiled by The Superyacht Group's editors who have witnessed, reported on and evaluated the events and trends of 2012 and applied them to state of the industry predictions for 2013. These are complemented by industry leaders' privileged perspectives on current hot topics.

The Superyacht Annual Report provides an unrivaled amount of industry information and data, so to give a stronger flavour of what’s really inside this subscriber only, intelligent and insightful annual issue, SuperyachtDesign, its sister title, has extracted some of its highlights.

The State of the Industry Reports

During the SuperyachtDesign Summit in September 2012, the panel of designers was asked to identify a trend that defines the direction of yacht design coming into 2013 and beyond. Taking this as his starting point, editor of SuperyachtDesign Justin Ratcliffe concludes with his own take on trends in the design of superyacht, as can be read in key extracts below:

"Having photographed Philippe Starck’s wonderfully whimsical interior [of motoryacht A] – not to mention an exterior profile that has made it simultaneously the most loved and loathed yacht afloat – it will not be easy to shift. Being a trendsetter can be a risky business."

"Perhaps Rowell hits on a genuine design trend here certainly the kind of ostentatious, gold-encrusted interiors we were accustomed to seeing not so long ago are less common today."

Leaders Comments

We asked a huge cross range of the industry’s leaders, from managing directors to top designers, to answer five key questions on pertinent issues. The response was both candid and diverse, identifying intrinsic industry strengths and weaknesses. Below are examples of what was said:

How can we better sell and develop our industry to potential clients around the world?

Tony Castro, director, Tony Castro Design
"One way that comes to mind is to have some sort of grading system, of both people and shipyards, in order to stop any Tom, Dick or Harry from entering the industry. The industry needs to have some sort of control because there are varying standards."

What are the barriers to entry? And what can we do to overcome those barriers?

Fabrizio Scerch, sales deputy director megayachts, Azimut Benetti
"Usually yacht owners are seen as cash cows in the eyes of suppliers and their products usually cost three times more than usual once it is known who the buyer is.This tends to be the case in Europe and is definitely a barrier to the industry."

Superyacht Intelligence Global Order Book: Verified and hard-hitting data

This time a year ago our Annual Report recorded 423 yachts in build: one year on there are 407 yachts in build, showing that the industry seems to have achieved a reassuring degree of stability. In this number have we finally found the new ‘normal’?

"Of course, if this is the case, and the drop in orders has levelled out for good, this is no cause for complacency order books do not fill themselves and it takes continued work to maintain this level. Such a trend also suggests that there are a finite number of orders for the world's shipyards to compete for, and clearly some will be left disappointed."
- Editor, Superyacht Intelligence Global Order Book, Ellie Brade.

In 2012 there were 111 new entrants to the order book and 182 yachts delivered. Of the builds underway, 34 per cent of those are new orders placed in 2012.

This insightful data, market analysis and intelligence is critical to the future of the market.
