Claydon Reeves, the Lymington-based design studio responsible for the Cosmos and Remora concepts, invited SuperyachtDesign to the unveiling of the latest Avocet by MMI Sportscars Ltd. The evening event, which took place on Friday 23rd March, was hosted at the RAC Club in Pall Mall, London.

Designed by co-founder of Claydon Reeves, Mike Reeves, the Avocet is an evolution of the Strathcarron SC5A, which was initially powered by a Triumph motorbike engine. “Many of the skills and techniques that I honed in automotive design are now applied to my work as a yacht designer,” reveals Reeves. “The Avocet demonstrates the studio’s broad spectrum and versatility. We can offer a complete design service taking in product design, automotive/transportation design, as well as yacht, residential, and jet assignments.”

The new model joins the list of great cars previewed at the club including Stirling Moss’s Lotus 18, the Atalanta Sports Tourer, a 1956 Bristol Drophead Coupe and the Red Bull Formula 1 car. Developed by MMI Sportscars, the vehicle was created with the aim of being an affordable road car but loaded with the power and performance needed for track days.

Powered by a Ford DHE420 two-litre engine, the current version produces 150bhp. However, a modified version was presented on the night—owned by Reeves—producing 220bhp, with a kerb weight of 720kg.

Only six prototypes of the mid-engine car have been built in order to evaluate the ride, handling and reliability. Several variations have been developed including a spyder model and a removable hard top version. Initial studies have also been conducted to investigate the possibility of using electric propulsion.

“Construction of the vehicle has been designed to ensure a very efficient assembly process and also allows the easy installation of new engine and gearboxes as the industry develops new products,” concludes Reeves. “We hope that in the future we can do more work with this car including dropping on different body systems.”
