Erica XII, a 53-metre sloop, replaced Janice of Wyoming on the slipway for servicing and maintenance.
The rebuilt slip has been constructed to allow the yard to easily haul the growing number of large superyachts that have been produced in recent years.
“The upgrade will increase the tonnes per metre ratio,” said Craig Park, managing director of Orams Marine Services. “With improved design and technology superyachts are being built longer and heavier, although the foot of the keel hasn’t increased in size, normally being around seven metres. On the slipway the keel takes 100% of the vessel weight and our new facility will more evenly spread the load.”
Running parallel to the slipway project is the completion of a 90-metre work berth that will continue to allow the Orams Marine Services to accommodate larger vessels at the yard, including 88-metre Athena. The vessel will be arriving in January to undergo servicing and maintenance work that will last six months.
With
Auckland steadily growing as a superyacht destination, and the New Zealand
Rugby World Cup in September 2011, the improvements are being carried out at
the yard as projections indicate a continuing busy period in 2011.
