Progress for Van Oossanen's FDHF
Just over a year since it first presented the Fast Displacement Hull Form concept (FDHF), Van Oossanen & Associates has secured orders for the naval architecture of six more FDHF motoryachts...…
These six designs of varying sizes from several different design studios, including Omega Architects, RMK Marine and Espen Oeino, demonstrate how the FDHF can be applied to a wide variety of yachts. Of the six designs, two are smaller motor yachts: the Rivocean 1900 and the Storm 72, ordered by Dutch yards. Both of these have a maximum speed of well over 20 knots and are required to be exceptionally fuel economic at lower cruising speeds. Also on the drawing board are two 50-metre, 500 GT motoryachts; one a fully custom yacht for a private client and the other a lead vessel in a series of semi-custom yachts for RMK Marine. The Ghost Yachts series, G180, G180V and the G180H, which SYD have reported on over the course of the year, are also under development and feature the FDHF. Finally, a 73-metre motoryacht, also for a private owner, was added at the end of the year.
According to Van Oossanen & Associates, a number of yards, including some of the top yards in the Netherlands as well as abroad are also considering the FDHF for their new designs, as a step up from current technology.
The FDHF offers a solution to the problem of having to develop different hulls for the displacement and semi-displacement modes of operation, the FDHF hull is efficient in both speed ranges and thus offers great flexibility when wanting a semi-custom series for a wide speed range. With 15 per cent less resistance when compared to traditional hull forms, the FDHF requires less power to achieve desired speeds.
Van Oossanen & Associates is continuing to develop the FDHF, continuously refining the concept, with research now focusing on optimising the FDHF for a vertical stem configuration. Further model testing will take place in the course of 2011.
