24m superyacht 'Manhattan' sinks after fire at Portosole Sanremo, Italy

A fire that began in the early hours of 29 August, in the waters of Portosole Sanremo, has led to the sinking of 24m Maiora build, 'Manhattan'. The fire was started on board 23m Pershing 'Ibris', which was also lost.…

An overnight fire at Portosole Sanremo has claimed two yachts, the 24m Maiora-built Manhattan and 23m Pershing, Ibris.

According to Lena Sundell, yacht manager at Sanremo-based ASP Yacht Management, the fire began at around 4am, with the crew of Ibris returning from a trip to Palermo. The fire appears to have been caused by a meal that was being prepared on board, mid-voyage. Apparently, hot oil was spilt, catching fire and spreading across the deck.

The fire then spread to neighbouring Manhattan, but luckily there was nobody on board, so she was towed out to open water to avoid the blaze spreading further.

Manhattan (left) is cast out to sea as both vessels continue to blaze.

As Sundell explained, “both boats sank.” “The vessel that was towed out of the harbour sank this morning at around 10:30, whilst Ibris sank where she was berthed.” Both vessels are total losses.

Manhattan is a total loss.

SuperyachtNews.com contacted Portosole Sanremo but the harbour refused to comment at this time.

The local coast guard and fire department are currently investigating the incident and will be issuing the results of their report in due course.

Hundreds of guests and crew had to be evacuated whilst fire crews attended to the blaze.
