IGY Marinas has confirmed that it has completed the expansion of the Newport Yacht Club & Marina, so that it now accommodates 50 per cent more superyachts. Of the 154 slips available 18 are now available for the berthing of superyachts.

The owner of the marina, Newport Associates Development Company, is thrilled with the expansion and the marina’s continued growth under IGY Marina’s stewardship. “Newport Yacht Club & Marina stands ready to welcome even more mega yachts and visitors to the most convenient dockage location in New York Harbor. We are pleased to be able to meet the ever-increasing demand for larger yacht berths, while continuing to offer best-in-class service,” said Eric Simonton, Vice President of Real Estate for IGY Marinas.

Superyacht hubs within city centre locations are, to an extent, en vogue with Barcelona’s Marina Port Vell, Dubai’s Marina Yacht Club and Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour Village all offering berthing at the very heart of their respective cities.

According to Sarah Bensimon, IGY’s sales and marketing manager, the Newport facility has achieved this by offering a gateway to New York’s lauded Manhattan district. Speaking to SuperyachtNews.com she said:

“With New York City as its front yard, the Newport Yacht Club and Marina is a top-level facility offering the best in service at a premier location on the Hudson River. Nestled on the waterfront of the $10 billion Newport community, the marina is highlighted by luxury apartment towers, a health spa, tennis courts, a swimming pool, shopping mall and top restaurants. While city centres have become hotspots for yachtsmen all over the globe, the Newport Yacht Club & Marina is a clear gateway to everything Manhattan has to offer.”

For Norma Trease, director of sales and marketing for the Salamanca Group, owner of Marina Port Vell, there are still a number of challenges that encumber the development of a city centre marina. These include, "rather obviously, the limitations of geography, for as a city has grown up around any body of water, the land available is always limited," she said. "Then you have the increasingly relevant challenges of being environmentally sensitive and friendly - this to include how to remove aging docks which might need to be replaced, as well as maintaining the local ecological sensitivities when doing any construction. Huge.

"Obviously, any marine project needs to properly integrated into the community, in order to benefit the immediate area and it's residents. This brings up a sensitive issue - 'how can a marina project also financially benefit local business?' It's important to 'share the wealth', and make sure that nearby businesses - whether they be shops, restaurants, taxis, or marine specific-ones such as chandlers, technical or concierge services - are allowed to access this big potential market which yachting represents."
