New roll damping system expected from motion control duo

A new roll damping system, recently previewed to rapt industry audiences, could soon be presented as a prototype under a company formed by two experts in the field of motion control.

AntiRoll, an innovative roll stabilization system for superyachts, was created two years ago by Arnold van Aken, who, together with partner Patrick Noor, has founded DMS Holland to act as the system’s exclusive representative. It is also currently the distributor for a second system on the market.

"Our aim is to present a prototype of AntiRoll at the Superyacht Pavilion during METS 2013 with DMS Holland," outlined van Aken.

"Last month, a select group of engineers and designers working in the superyacht industry, had a preview of the concept which generated enthusiastic responses."

AntiRoll is currently patent pending, being developed in collaboration with MARIN, TNO and TU Delft. But, it promises to offer “uncompromising” performance both cruising and at zero speed. It is also retractable and 'greener' than current systems and the first system that can also be suitable for sailing yachts, say the developers.

As well as AntiRoll, DMS Holland has been appointed European distributor for RotorSwing Marine, an electric and retractable roll damping system for yachts up to 30 metres based on the Magnus effect. Its benefits include higher roll damping at lower speeds compared to conventional systems with fins.

"We are delighted with the appointment of DMS Holland as our distributor. There is no better alliance for RotorSwing,” commented Theo Koop, founder of RotorSwing Marine BV and the former Koopnautic Holland. “Arnold and Patrick’s vast knowledge of stabilizers and years of experience in the industry are a very valuable asset for us."

RotorSwing Marine and DMS Holland have opened a sales and service office in Raamsdonkveer, on the banks of the river Maas, Holland. Sea trials can be arranged by appointment using the demonstration yacht.

Noor and Van Aken launch the company following lengthy careers in the maritime industry and technical experience with roll damping. Van Aken has already created another business, an electrical consultancy business for superyachts after holding positions at companies including European service manager and service engineer for Naiad Marine. Noor joins DMS Holland from Naiad Dynamics where he worked throughout Europe as a sales engineer specialising in the roll damping of yachts.

A full report on stabiliser systems will be published in the April, management and operations issue of The Superyacht Report
