New mast for Salperton IV

Salperton IV is ready for sailing with a new 61.5m mast following her dismasting in January 2011.…

Salperton IV has been fitted with a new mast following her dismasting earlier in the year.

The replacement mast for the 45m performance sloop was built by Southern Spars’ Custom Projects team in New Zealand. The Southern Spars Rig Pro team then fitted and dock-tuned it at Tarragona, Spain before accompanying Salperton IV to Palma de Mallorca, where her original boom and new Doyle sail package were installed.

The 61.52m mast is hybrid modulus carbon fibre with an EC6 continuous rigging package. It features modifications to the original design with a new batten car system, recently developed by Southern Spars to reduce loading on the luft tape.

Salperton IV was dismasted sailing off the coast of Guadaloupe on 22 January 2011. The cause of the incident, which saw the mast break approximately six metres above deck, was not ascertained at the time. An investigation was subsequently launched but the cause has still yet to be established. It is understood the new mast is covered under the vessel's insurance policy.

After missing two seasons, Salperton IV is now ready to begin sailing again. With the new mast she has completed her sea trials successfully off Palma and is now heading to the Caribbean to take part in the BVI superyacht regatta and the St Barths Bucket.
