Mersin Marina opens in Turkey
A new marina on Turkey's southern coast will offer 'the best repair and maintenance marina in the Eastern Mediterranean' according to operators.…
The marina is located at Mersin, a large city boasting the second tallest skyscraper in Turkey on the Mediterranean-facing southern coast. Although, billed as ‘the largest marina on Turkey’s southern coast’, with a 500 berth capacity, only two of those can accommodate superyachts.
Its strength however, lies in its refit services for superyachts. Mersin offers a 160 tonne lift, a 300 tonne slipway and has recently invested US$5 million into machinery. Tuna Baykal, marketing manager for Mersin said it will be "the best repair and maintenance marina in [the] Eastern Mediterranean and Europe.”
Certainly not the scenic destination offered by neighbouring marinas, Antalya and Finike, which offer beautiful bays and historic sites, the new marina at Mersin is likely to be of interest for essential needs and repair work. It offers basic amenities including electricity, fresh water, cable TV, wireless internet, fuel station, laundry and dry cleaning services. There is also a spa and swimming pool.

Berths are expected to be taken up by Middle Eastern and European clients, with yachts from Lebanon, Syria and Europe currently at the marina.

Meanwhile, Turkey is becoming one of the fastest growing countries in Europe for superyacht berths, which grew at a rate of 9% from 2008 to 2010 (Source: Superyacht Intelligence, Summer issue 2011). This is either in response to an increased or anticipated demand on the region.
