MARPOL Annex V outlines new rules governing garbage disposal

The Wider Caribbean is classified by MARPOL Annex V as the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea proper, including the bays and seas therein and that portion of the Atlantic Ocean.
Under the ruling, in specified areas the disposal of garbage into the sea is prohibited. In this instance garbage is classed as all plastics, paper products, rags, glass, metal, bottles, crockery, dunnage, lining and packing materials.
Food waste must not be disposed of within three nautical miles of land.
