Download the newly amended STCW Code
Following years of discussions and preparations, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has created a set of amendments to the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping Convention (STCW), known as the “Manila Amendments”. These amendments address training requirements of professional yacht crew including increased security and environmental awareness. …
Other areas considered include electro-technical officer training and certification requirements (for larger ships rather than large yachts); ECDIS
training; able seaman courses (though it is not obligatory for any ship to carry someone who has taken the course); revalidation of certain short
STCW courses; and the possibility of amalgamating Y1 and Y2 engineering exams.
According to IMO News, these amendments are set to enter into force on 1 January 2012.
