Latitude to offset carbon emissions

Paul Bickley, captain of the 52.5m Benetti-build, Latitude has revealed that the charter vessel is lowering her carbon footprint by offsetting all carbon emissions. This process is managed by Yacht Carbon Offset, which counterbalances the yacht’s engines’ footprint with equivalent emission reduction from various green energy projects around the world.

Bickley explained the rationale behind the move: “Delivering excellent service to our guests often includes the assurance that the highest standards are in place – including taking all practical steps to operate in an environmentally sensitive manner. Carbon offsetting is therefore a natural progression for Latitude and I’m sure will be welcomed by all on board.”

Yacht Carbon Offset’s Managing Director Mark Robinson added: “We are delighted that Latitude is the latest major superyacht to include Yacht Carbon Offset as standard practice on board.

Synfo.com asked Robinson whether this was indicative of an increase in environmental awareness on the part of owners and captains. He said that his business activity demonstrated a growing interest in the concept:  

“I’ve spoken with several yachts who have had first-hand experience of guests asking about environmental performance and carbon footprint in particular, so yes, there is hard evidence that the relevant people are environmentally aware.  

“Amongst captains, brokers and yacht managers too, there is increasing recognition that the service is relevant, although you well know that across the whole industry there is still great pressure on discretionary spending.  So for us the focus remains on value – if the carbon offset is just that type of ‘thoughtful touch’ that for particular guests would be welcome - then it really is the “day job” for those running the superyacht. The expectation is for exceptional, innovative service, not simply keeping to past traditions.”
