CJR Propulsion, manufacturers of propeller and sterngear systems, have announced the beginning of a long-term partnership with the University of Southampton. The joint venture will aim to develop accurate design tools that will ultimately optimise propeller and sterngear technology, enhancing performance, fuel efficiency and longevity, as well as reducing vibration. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), CJR and the University aim to analyse and solve problems relating to fluid flows.

The collaboration will utilise the part-government funded Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) scheme, which offers postgraduate students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience, whilst giving commercial value back into the private sector.

The project is now well underway and exciting results are already in the pipeline. From just their first project, they have gained better knowledge of the stresses hull appendages have to face below the waterline, allowing them to significantly reduce the appendage drag - something that contributes from 10% to 15% of the overall drag of a craft. This improvement could mean around a two-knot increase in cruise speed for high-speed vessels.
