UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, Dubai. There are only a few days left till the start of the second Design Days Dubai event, the first design fair of its kind in the Middle East and South Asia, which provides a platform for the presentation of collectible and limited edition furniture and design objects. Among the companies set to attend the event, which will run from 18 – 21 March, is English artisan studio Based Upon.

“We have done quite a few projects in the Middle East for very high profile clients and organisations,” explains Melodie Duverger at Based Upon. “We have developed a solid market in the Far East and in India particularly, so Design Days Dubai is an opportunity for us to touch base with our existing clients as well as present some of our best pieces, inspired by the region, to new potential ones.”

The “If I had known then, what I know now”

Coinciding with the city’s premier art event, Art Week, the Design Days Dubai aims to attract the most exclusive selection of purchasable, limited edition designs to the region, and display them in a dedicated venue in Downtown Dubai. Among the pieces that will be on show at the event are Based Upon’s Bronze Fragmented Crack Coffee Table, the “If I had known then, what I know now” – which are a part of its ‘Nature The Creator, Man The Editor’ series – Remembering Knightsbridge, Stillness Speaks and the Twist Table.

The Remembering Knightsbridge

As the title suggests, the ‘Nature The Creator, Man The Editor’ pieces were created around the idea that all that is truly beautiful is already available in the world and that designers and artists can capture or frame it rather than trying to mimic or improve it.

“This approach is based in the Islamic tradition that such is the divine beauty of God’s creation, any attempt to represent it figuratively is to demean it,” says Duverger. “We suggest that by casting directly from nature or by working with natural processes, the work is surrendered to nature and allows beauty to emerge as God wills it.”

Based Upon will also be attending this year’s Masterpiece London (27 June - 3 July), where it will present a piece specifically created for the show along with its latest techniques and pieces.
