Adela, the 55-metre 1995 Pendennis superyacht, took the second Pendennis Cup on Saturday, where she was up against other classic ladies in her class, Mariette, Mariquita and Velacarina. Having consistently performed well all week - winning on days one and three, coming second on day two to Mariette following a split spinnaker - she had already won the regatta before the starting pistol was fired on the final day. Therefore a pursuit race was suggested for the Class 1 superyachts.
Adela launches spinnaker 'Big Red'
Saturday's St Pirans Pursuit Race was graced with sunny spells and northwesterly winds of 15-20 knots, giving the crews cheerier conditions in which to race their small but perfect formed fleet, divided into two classes. Class 2's winner was not predetermined by this point, however, and either Tomahawk or Pinuccia could be the victor by taking line honours that day.
The planning for starting times in the day's racing was carried out by Race Officer Neil Andrew, who had to take into account performances from the vessels during the week's sailing as well as their IRC ratings.
Mariette rounds the mark
The first yacht to set off for the day was Velacarina, at 11:00, followed by Mariette at 11:26 and Mariquita not far behind at 11:30. Adela's fast track record and IRC Rating meant that she did not set off for another 28 minutes, at 11:58, giving her plenty of distance to catch up on; by the time she started the race, each of the other yachts had rounded the windward mark. Her crew had their work cut out for them.
Mariette pursued by Adela
While Class 1's superyachts were staggered in their starts, hopefully providing more dramatic finish due to the pursuit, Class 2's vessels both started at 11:00. There was much jostling before their race even started that morning. According to the Pendennis records, the prestart of the Class 2 race went as follows: "Pinuccia shadowing Tomahawk throughout and into the first beat towards Swanpool Beach. Pinuccia pushed Tomahawk beyond the lay line and tacked first towards St Anthony’s Lighthouse. Tomahawk then was able to use good boat speed to beat to her to the mark and was round first launching her kite followed by Pinuccia." But Tomahawk unluckily had a shroud/rig failure near the Manacles, which resulted in her mast breaking. Although at the time she was ahead of rival Pinuccia, she had to surrender the Class 2 Cup.
Pinuccia and Tomahawk
The downwind leg of Class 1 racing, however, was full of activity. Starting within four minutes of one another, Mariette and Mariquita battled it out, the former gibing across the latter's course and gaining her lead before reaching the Manacles.
Velacarina was still ahead at this stage, holding her lead from an earlier start, and she continued to lead on the approach to St Anthony's Lighthouse; Mariette and Mariquita were still close, with Mariette still slightly ahead. But at the first gibe Mariette's spinnaker went out of control and her sheets became tangled. Mariquita used this to her advantage and pulled ahead into second, managing a lead of a couple of minutes before Mariette could fix her sail situation and reach the Manacles. While all this was happening, Adela was closing in on the fleet with her 'Big Red' spinnaker propelling her down the first leg.
Mariquita
Overall, Adela came first to win the Pendennis Cup 2010, with Mariette in second place, Mariquipa in third and Velacarina in fourth place.
The provisional plans for the 2012 Pendennis Cup - the year of the London Olympics - are to hold the regatta in early summer. The racing will be managed by the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association and the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club.
