UK, London. The 2016 edition of SuperyachtDESIGN Week promises to be multi-faceted, thought-provoking and engaging, with keynote presentations, workshops, interactive installations and a packed social programme. The event, held next week in the heart of London’s design community, will once again see superyacht designers, naval architects, shipyards and industry suppliers gather in Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour.

A notable theme running throughout the programme - in both keynotes and workshops - is the dissecting of ‘trends’, be it of contemporary clients or ideas for the future owner. Dimitris Hadjidimos, D-ID leads a workshop that will identify how the design community can anticipate the needs of their clients, and find smart solutions to problems we may face in the future. Hadjidimos, joined by researcher Emma Spence, lecturer at Royal Holloway, Joanna Feeley, founder of agency The Trend Bible and Gary Rossall of BMT Nigel Gee, will explore how the market can be proactive towards new trends, and look further afield to see how other industries are adapting.

Additionally, Patrick Coote, Blohm + Voss and Marnix Hoekstra, Vripack will lead a session on the final day of SYDW entitled ‘The Future Owner’. The workshop will outline the collaboration between these two industry figures as they work together to meet the needs of the new influx of owners that will enter into our industry.

The programme also invites the next-generation of designers and influencers. Sean McCarten, lecturer at Coventry University and editor of the International Journal of Marine Design, will host a workshop detailing a recent collaboration between the university and shipyards and designers, including Feadship. This session, in addition to the Student Showcase taking place over the three days, provides an arena for those entering into the market to present their work and for industry representatives to engage with the new faces in design.

An ever-popular session, designer Q&As return this year with designers from Mulder Design, Evan K Marshall, Redman Whiteley Dixon and Seymour Diamond all taking part in workshops exploring their work and the processes behind their designs.

Workshops also look to strip down and examine the ways in which our industry works; these sessions will tackle subjects such as the yacht’s general arrangement, the flexibility of regulatory codes, marketing and re-branding a design studio and how to ensure protection when drawing up contracts.

The keynote sessions at this year’s event will discuss a wide range of themes, from the yacht designer who has created the ultimate supercar - the BAC Mono - to the latest in cinema technology for the marine world, these presentations are sure to educate and inspire all those in attendance.

Guillaume Rolland, principal yacht designer at Christian Liaigre, will take to the stage on the final day of the event. His keynote session, entitled ‘Design Doesn’t Exist’, will explore the how the design house’s latest marine projects, reflects the ethos of this renowned brand. The keynote session will also look at the practicalities of design and how to create the ultimate experience for the owner onboard. “I’m looking forward to having an exchange with the audience about the real meaning of the word ‘design’," remarked Rolland ahead of the event.
