How can we save time with new build projects?

Owners open up about the sometimes long and arduous build process and how they plan to save time and money.…

The issue of long build times is nothing new to the potential owner, however, The Superyacht Owner spoke with two owners who are trying to change the way we think and build. Investing their time and energy into the initial design phase will allow these owners to only break ground at the shipyard once every detail has been finalised, allowing quick delivery of their yacht.

As one owner explained, "we're spending incredible time investigating every single component, to make sure we have the best possible solution for the issues in question". Speaking with Marnix Hoekstra of Vripack, he believes that "the main reason why owners should spend significantly more time in the engineering phase of a new build is to get it right the first time." In fact, as Hoekstra continues "from our studies and analysis of new builds in the past seven years, we've found that when owners are involved from the beginning, the final result is a sounder vessel that creates much less hassle during the construction."

Indeed, as another owner explained "it is important that you finish all of the preparations before going to a shipyard, by having all of the engineering done so you know exactly how the ship is going to be built, [so] you deliver a package which includes the production engineering". As Ron Cleveringa of Burger Boat Company explains "we believe that it is essential that the intended shipyard be engaged with the owner and designer early in the engineering process."

What everyone is trying to achieve is less wait time for owners. From the initial step of purchasing the project, to delivery, many years are spent wasted waiting. Hoekstra continues "the time saved will allow the owner to sail sooner, which is a result of getting things right during the first step of design, naval architecture and engineering". Cleveringa completely agrees when he says that "the shipyard, as a key member of the team, provides valuable insight that will increase the design and construction efficiency, as well as the vessel's overall quality and value, while reducing the overall project duration."

With owners taking matters into their own hands to reduce time spent in the build process, the industry experts The Superyacht Owner spoke to are in agreement that this is a realistic option for owners. While there is still more to be done, opening the dialogue and formulating alternatives will hopefully lead to less time and money wasted on new builds in the future.
