Unlimited Marine Services, Inc. (UMSI) will be debuting its new customisable monitor matrix system later this month at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The Touch-Screen Automation Technology (T-SAT) video distribution system will be on display at the company’s booth, 684A, in the Yacht Builders Tent at the show 25–29 October.

The T-SAT system, which is IMO compliant and runs through a single CAT5 cable, is able to display up to 64 separate HD video sources simultaneously on monitors across the entire vessel. It is powered by the Crestron DVPHD and DGE-2 digital graphics engine and allows monitoring of radar, sonar, sounder, plotting systems, vessel monitoring systems, and entertainment systems, among others. Management of access to the systems on a monitor-to-monitor basis is available for security. It also allows users to monitor and control the light, HVAC, AV and blind/shade systems throughout the vessel, so it can be used by guests.

UMSI president James Porreca commented: “There is so much capability out there with today’s technology that is not being tapped into. We worked with engineers from Hatteland and Crestron to put together this new system. The T-SAT is a unique navigation monitor matrix that also allows extremely unique control throughout the vessel. For example, it allows users to slide displays between monitor screens on the bridge, and adapt the on-screen display for multiple layouts. What is great about the system is that it runs via HDMI or DVI cables for short distances or a single CAT5 cable that you can run hundreds of feet without losing any video quality.”

Porreca emphasised that the move towards high definition in systems is relevant for more than aesthetic purposes: “Although there have been systems that allow monitoring in analogue video in multiple locations on board before, the T-SAT allows users to see the information in high definition. It is expected that most systems will be converting over to high definition quality in 2013, so if you don’t have an HDMI distribution on board, you will have to convert the systems to high definition to be able to distribute it.

The integration of system controls to a single panel has been a growing trend for some time, catalyzed by the growing popularity of the iPad. Porreca said the company is seeing that guests now prefer to use a touch panel than a separate remote for many of the on-board entertainment systems. For example, UMSI recently worked on controls for a sun deck where the touch panels were put into the bar itself.

“A lot of the developments are being driven by the captains and crew who would like to be able to manipulate their monitors very quickly in high quality, and ensure it is still an IMO-compliant system,” he continued, explaining the increasing popularity of digital communication between crew, and even crew and guests, on board. “With T-SAT, users are able to make and send on-screen annotations to the same or other monitors for communication between crew members, for example to leave alerts or notes to those on the next watch shift. There are many different options. For example, you could send a menu page to pop up on the television in a guest room each morning. The customisation and availability with the system is endless.”
