Dutch shipyard Icon Yachts has been commissioned to complete the conversion of 73m Legend (formerly Giant) into an explorer charter yacht. The fully classified Class 1 icebreaker vessel features a new exterior design by Diana Yacht Design, which will see the stern of Legend extended by 3.6m to accommodate a swimming pool and swim platform.
“Work started on the project last January with the removal of the old interior, concrete ballast and steel parts, which the owner organised himself,” says operations director at Diana Yacht Design Bart de Haan. “While this took place, we were approached by the owner to create a new exterior design. After the design was more or less finished the owner decided to have the rebuild at Icon.”
The project will be managed by Verkerk Yachting Projects, with design and engineering provided by Diana Yacht Design. The project is scheduled for completion in the summer 2015, and will be chartered in areas such as Antarctica, Greenland and the North Pole.

Capable of carrying 30 guests, while maintaining her icebreaker credentials, the conversion will see an upgrade of all technical systems and will be Lloyds certified. The exterior will see the inclusion of a commercially certified helipad and a garage on the foredeck capable of housing a submarine.
