Blohm+Voss’ iconic 75m 'Enigma' listed for sale
The head-turning Blohm+Voss-built motoryacht, Enigma, formerly known as Eco and Katana, has been listed for sale with Nick Edmiston of Edmiston & Company. The 75m build is currently based in the Mediterranean and has an asking price of €47.5 million.
“You know a yacht is iconic when a world-class shipyard still uses it as their main advertisement some 25 years after they built her”, begins Nick Edmiston of the eponymous brokerage house. “That speaks volumes for the quality and the pride the builders took in this particular commission."
“I think some of the other boats in this segment have not been seriously for sale – and when they’ve become seriously for sale, the prices have been adjusted accordingly”, he continues. “But Enigma is sensibly priced in order for her to sell, she was excellently designed and is in like-new condition.”
Enigma was launched out of Blohm+Voss’ Hamburg facility in 1991 to a design penned by Martin Francis, whose creative dynamism has also been exemplified on Schweer’s 59.2m Senses and the enormous 7,600gt Lurssen build, Golden Odyssey, amongst others.
In addition to the panoramic convex windows set into her GRP superstructure, the design brief put forward by the original owner Emilio Azcárraga, CEO and Chairman of Televisa, was very performance-focussed.
After analysis of the steel hull – which incorporates hydrofoils to reduce drag – the German shipyard calculated that a breath-taking 28,500hp would achieve the desired top speed of 34 knots. This record-breaking power is generated by two 5,000hp diesel Deutz engines driving steerable water jets and one 18,500hp gas turbine engine driving a fixed water jet.
“The first owner originally wanted a slightly smaller yacht, but to reach these speeds they needed a longer waterline length”, Edmiston explains. She has a low profile, a short superstructure and a narrow beam – for every 1m of beam, she offers 0.52m more in length than the average 72.5 – 77.5m motoryacht in the global fleet. In this same motoryacht size segment, she is also just over 500 gross tons below average, with an interior volume of 1,150gt.
The interior is made up of an intelligently unconventional layout, comprising accommodation on board for 15 guests in six cabins. “All the guest accommodation is on the main deck with these great windows. Unlike many yachts where you have to get out of bed, stand on your tiptoes and look out a porthole for the views, on here you can do it all from the comfort of your own bed”, Edmiston concludes.
