Tim Saunders Yacht Design (TSYD) is a superyacht design studio providing innovative design solutions for international clients and shipyards working on custom, production and refit projects varying in style and length from 20 to 200 metres. While TSYD is a relatively new name, Tim Saunders is currently enjoying his 20th year in the industry and has worked alongside some of the world's top designers and shipyards on various projects. The design studio has announced two distinctive new series of yachts: the Murena 365 Sail Cruiser, the first in a new range of sailing yachts, and the Murena 25, the first in a new line of exhilarating sports cruisers. Tim Saunders outlines the new projects.

The origin of the Murena yachts was born out of considerable market research. TSYD carefully examined the potential competition and interviewed a wide array of yacht owners as well as many producers. It became all too clear that in order to offer owner’s a refreshing and successful new range of craft, it would be necessary to break free of many current trends and simply give the clients what they want.

In summary, we would have to provide stunning looks, good sea-keeping, high performance and manoeuvrability, high build quality, excellent comfort, a well considered layout, flexibility in configurations and safety and reliability. And value for money. So with this premise in mind, we realised it would be essential to work closely together with an experienced yard capable of not only producing high quality craft, but also be open-minded enough to take on this challenge and succeed.

TSYD chose to team up with Sinan Özer, yacht innovator and Managing Director of Aegean Yacht in Bodrum. The shipyard was founded in 1976 and has since successfully produced a wide variety of yachts ranging from 16 to 57 metres. Aegean Yacht has evolved intelligently over the years and has become respected as one of the premiere yards for larger sailing yachts in Turkey.

The Murena 365 Sail Cruiser is an innovative multi-purpose sail cruiser, which offers sleek looks, an unusually high internal volume and a variety of internal layouts tailored to individual owner  lifestyles. This 36.5-metre yacht could be likened to a Grand Tourer and provides the features, standard of living and comfort you would expect to find on a larger luxury yacht, while still remaining a serious sailing yacht. It has been designed to allow build options using steel and aluminium or composite to suit the owner’s requirements and budget.

The rig and sails may be configured according to the owner’s preference and the standard fixed keel can be replaced with the option of a variable centreboard for easy access to shallow bays and marinas. For the competitive sailor, a telescopic bowsprit and spinnaker can be fitted to increase the sail area and sailing performance.

Depending on the cabin option, there is a private entry to the aft accommodation through the sliding glass visage on the aft deck. The port and starboard stairs lead up to the spacious side decks that safely guide guests all the way to the bow. The slightly raised twin helms offer excellent visibility over the superstructure. The seating area just forward of the helm provides a great place to sit and relax both during and after a hard day at sea.

The Murena 25 Sports Cruiser is also designed with flexibility in mind. The large aft deck again is home to the tender and when deployed, converts to a large area for enjoying the sun or using the hydraulic swim platform.

Forward is a master cabin with en-suite, and aft two twin/double rooms both with en-suite facilities.
Further aft is access to the galley and dining area.
There is a second layout option that sees the galley moved to the main deck and a new full-beam master suite on the lower deck with private access to the aft deck. This flexibility allows this boat to accommodate eight guests in comfort and style. By re-configuring the interior layout, the boat can be offered as a chase or rescue boat or a limousine tender.

The engine space has been designed to accommodate up to four engines and propulsion Pods (e.g. Volvo IPS or ZF) and when configured for speed the M25 is capable of planning at 45 knots. Other up-to-date technologies include joystick control, DPS (Dynamic Positioning System) as well as improved fuel efficiency, with savings of up 30 per cent.

Similar to the M365 Sail Cruiser in style and ethos, the M25 Sports Cruiser is conceived so that it can be built from aluminium or composite, again suiting the client’s requirements, wishes and budget.
