Not to be missed at SYDWeek 2014

With SuperyachtDESIGN Week set to open its doors next week, SuperyachtNews.com highlights the unmissable sessions being held from 24-26 June at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour.…

Opening its doors for the second annual installment of SuperyachtDESIGN Week at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour next Tuesday 24 June, there will be no shortage of exciting presentations, discussions and debates to attend over your three days. In order to optimise your time on site, we highlight a few of the unmissable sessions taking place this year.

A Unique Keynote:

The closing keynote session on day one, 24 June will feature the highly acclaimed Company Director and Senior Designer at Zaha Hadid Architects, Patrik Schumacher. Following their recent collaboration with Blohm+Voss on the Unique Circle Yachts concept, Schumacher and the team are planning on utilising their wide range of land-based skills and expanding further into the superyacht world.

For the next generation:

A strong theme this year is preparing both the next generation for entering the industry, and preparing the industry for what the next generation of innovation plans to bring to the table. As such, there will be a few different sessions focusing on this topic. The opening keynote on day one 24 June, 'The Strategic Value of Yacht Design', being held in the Pavilion from 10:00 - 11:30 will feature a presentation from members of the European Institute of Design. This is followed by the breakout session, 'School's Out' from 12:00 - 13:30 led by leading designer, Rob Doyle and Matteo Conti of the Royal College of Art held in the Dedar showroom. This session will discuss how the next generation is being prepared whilst at school, and then received into a coveted superyacht design firm. Again on the third day, 26 June, 'Q&A Time with the Designers: The Newcomers', will hear from Fiona Diamond and Wayne Parker who have both branched out and opened their own boutique design firms and take place from 12:00 - 13:30 in the Summit showroom.

Innovative New Materials:

There will be two different material breakout sessions held this year, both taking place on 24 June. Installment one of 'Materials - Pushing the Boundaries' will be held from 12:00 - 13:30 in the Davidson showroom and hosted by James O'Callaghan of Eckersley O'Callaghan. After a brilliant presentation at the Global Superyacht Forum last November, O'Callaghan will return to discuss developments on his projects and his further involvement in the yachting industry, following earlier collaborations with Feadship on the 78m M/Y Venus. The second installment will be held on the same day from 15:00 - 16:30 in the Interior Supply showroom. Two inspiring new thinkers from Arup will lead the discussion, including Associate Director, Jan Wurm and Senior Engineer, Guglielmo Carra. Rob Henderson of UNStudio will deliver an opening keynote on 26 June in the Pavilion from 10:00 - 11:30 discussing the role that exchange of knowledge plays in design advancement.

The Legends:

Long time players in the industry, Terence Disdale and Martin Francis will offer a rare opportunity to sit in the line of fire and field any and all questions from those lucky enough to secure a seat in this highly sought after breakout session of Q&A Time with the Designers: The Legends, being held in the J Robert Scott showroom on 25 June from 12:00 - 13:30.

For the petrol heads:

This year will feature plenty of cross over from the automotive industry, with keynotes from Mr M A Zaman, President and CEO of the Royal Falcon Fleet (working in collaboration with Porsche Design), and keynotes by Andrew Bailey of McLaren and Hugo Nightingale of Jaguar. Their sessions will all be held in the Pavilion from 10:00 - 11:30 on 25 June; 17:00 - 18:00 also on 25th June; and the closing keynote on 26 June from 17:00 - 18:00 respectively.

For Captains and Crew:

With a number of new regulations hitting the industry for crew on board, it has never been more important to keep the crew in mind from the very beginning of the design stage. The breakout session, 'The Cost of Crew in Design' will be held on 25 June from 12:00 - 13:30 in the Davidson showroom, hosted by Greg Marshall, Chris van Hooren and Tanno Weeda, and is not to be missed if you need clarification on crew requirements.

There is no doubt that the three days will pack a punch and deciding between the various options may prove difficult. Please keep in mind that keynotes are for VIP badge holders only and priority is given to VIP's for seats in the breakout sessions as well.
