Helios Lubeoil has become a distributer of the Mikrocount fuel testing kit, which monitors levels of diesel bug in a fuel system. The test kit has an advantage over other testing methods because it is easy to use and portable rather than requiring expensive lab equipment.
The test takes one to four days to deliver a result and the level of the problem can be analysed with the help of the charts included with the kit. The vessel's engineer can then decide the most effective course of action to treat the problem. The test kit also comes with an 8kg canister of biocide and the chart gives a recommended dosage according to the scale of the infestation.
Cases of diesel bug could be set to rise due to changes in legislation regulating the sulphur content of fuel - it is now being limited to 10ppm - and an increase in the use of biofuels, which provide vital food to diesel-bug microorganisms. Any product that can become part of an effective fuel hygiene schedule is likely to be welcomed by the yachting community.
