Jan Wurm will be speaking at GSF this year
As Associate Director at Arup and currently based in their Berlin
office, Jan Wurm leads the materials consulting group in Europe.
Specialising in glass, timber and composites, Wurm is also research
portfolio holder for Europe and leader of the Technology team in
Germany. Providing an outsider's perspective on the possibilities in
glass, Wurm will share how we can possibly translate these possibilities into the
superyacht market during his presentation at the Global Superyacht Forum, 18-20 November in Amsterdam.SuperyachtDesign: What is one of your most interesting projects to date?
Jan Wurm: The SolarLeaf Façade system that has been showcased on the BIQ Building in Hamburg this year. In structural glass containers microalgae is cultivated to generate biomass and heat as renewable energy resources. See video here.
SYD: What is your involvement with the superyacht industry and why do you feel it is important?
JW: For some specialist architectural projects we have been working with glass processors specialised in yacht glazing – with respect to technologies such as bending and chemical strengthening flat glass this industry has excellent technologies and capabilities to offer.
SYD: Why do you think events like the Global Superyacht Forum are so important?
JW: For pushing the boundaries you need to work across disciplines and markets – the Global Superyacht Forum brings specialists and stakeholders from different fields together to act as a catalyst for driving innovation.
SYD: What are some interesting and exciting changes you are seeing in your field at the moment?
JW: New technologies around thin, flexible and strong glass are exciting these products have been developed primarily for the display industry but as the production sizes grow they hold some exciting potentials for the building industry.
