The 2014 Monaco Yacht Show issue of The Crew Report, issue 70 is our biggest issue. On the two-year anniversary of the magazine’s re-launch at the 2012 Monaco Yacht Show, we’ve made sure this issue is the best yet.
Earlier this year, following Martin H. Redmayne’s request that the industry re-evaluates the expectations of and placed upon crew, we asked crewmembers to take our survey and share their opinions on what they demand expect and require from the superyacht industry when it comes to qualifications, experience, attitude, appearance, salary and the portrayal of the industry in the media. In this issue, we bring you the findings of the survey, as well as putting them to industry professionals for comment.
Captains play a particularly important role in this issue. Three captains of classic yachts discuss their role when it comes to preserving a sense of nostalgia and traditionalism on board, while Captain Ben Chaplin shares his story of stepping on board M/Y Katrion as a deckhand 11 years ago and remaining on board the yacht for the remainder of his career. We also speak to the captains and owners of superyachts on which the yacht’s owner also has a licence to drive the boat, and learn how this affects operations and relationships on board. We even hear from a captain about his experience taking on the role of the broker when it came to selling his owner’s superyacht.
With so much discussion about the quality and quantity of training courses and training schools, in this issue we asked senior crew and leading figures from the training sector to suggest one new course needed in the industry or one amendment to an existing course, bringing some interesting opinions and points of discussion. We hear why there should be amendments to Power Boat Level 2, why one captain is in favour of a fiscal responsibility course and why one training provider thinks the industry needs a beginners’ Yacht 101 course.
Continuing our focus on the training sector, this issue also takes a look at the Professional Yachting Association’s GUEST programme; how it’s impacted in the interior sector so far and what we can hope for the future.
The issue also looks at captains’ thoughts on the culture of ‘junior paper captains’ (those who earn their certificates and work their way up the career ladder at a fast pace), the role of the recruitment agent when it comes to weeding out unsuitable candidates, changes to mandatory security training for superyacht crew and much more.
