More than just a refit, Attessa IV represents possibly the most comprehensive yacht reconfiguration ever undertaken anywhere in the world. Purchased in 2007, the 94-metre yacht Evergreen was taken to the owner’s shipyard in Vancouver, Canada where he then set up the required infrastructure, now known as Washington Yachting Group (WYG), to complete the project. WYG is an extensive facility, consisting of dedicated wood and metal-working shops, engineering and business offices next to a huge floating dry dock that was to hold the superyacht for the three-year reconfiguration process. Over two hundred personnel have been involved in transforming Evergreen into 110-metre Attessa IV.

According to Glade Johnson Design Inc (GDJI), the interior and exterior designers for this project, the owner had a clear vision of what he wanted from the very beginning. Working for over a year, GJDI produced concept digital renderings and 3D scale models to fine-tune the new design to meet the owner’s ideal. Interior concept work ran parallel to the exterior work and included many meetings on board with the owner and other members of the project team. This is the biggest Attessa yet being over 30 metres larger than Attessa III and with over three times the interior volume.

Evidently, this has been a mammoth project, with work beginning on the exterior even as the interior was being demolished. Every external surface has been altered and every interior space has been redesigned, until almost nothing of the original vessel remains visible. Externally, the bow was lengthened to have a more aggressive rake and the stern, which did not allow a easy access to the water, was cut off and a large lazzarette area with spa tub and seating was added. The team at WYG also engineered an elaborate stern door, created from a concept by GJDI, which retracts out of view under the swim step. Equally interesting are the curved deck projections that occur on several decks extending out beyond the hull in decidedly sculptural forms.

Even the expansive engine room with its two Wartsila diesels has been refreshed with new paint and polished stainless steel. The mast has been redesigned and new electronics added and the foremast has been replaced with a new sculptural folding design. A large tender storage bay was added forward of the wheelhouse.

The interior will be just as striking as the exterior, with several major changes to the original design.

On the lower cabin deck, four staterooms were eliminated to make room for a large spa facility including a full-beam gym, sauna, steam shower, massage room and beauty parlour. The main deck will feature what promises to be one of the more stunning areas of the yacht. Originally containing a salon, bar and karaoke room, the main deck has been transformed into an entertainment space, with a 12-place theatre for movies and small stage productions, a new grand salon with antique marble fireplace, inlayed marble floor and a separate enclosed bar area mirroring the style and glamour of the Hollywood Golden Age.

Glass has been used throughout Attessa IV to great effect. The boat deck foyer has been reconfigured with a curved wall of glass that opens onto a new sculptural deck projecting beyond the hull in an elegant curve. Located on each side of the foyer, these full-height glass walls and doors allow unimpeded views through from one side of the yacht to the other. At the very top of the yacht is the sky deck, containing an existing swimming pool that has been redesigned to include a glass wall at the aft end and a spa tub forward with another glass wall separating the two. GJDI have added glass touches to the interior design as well, with a custom glass chandelier hanging from the high ceiling in the dining room/library and glass fronted book and china cabinets. On the sky deck, aft of the pool, is the totally new clubroom with four-metre ceilings containing another large hanging glass chandelier, this time under a vast skylight and designed by Seattle-based artist Dale Chihuly. A glass top curving bar and places for casual dining and conversation will complete the club like environment.

The bridge deck includes the updated command bridge forward and the rest of the deck aft is devoted to the owner’s private rooms. The exterior owner’s area is expanded on each side by sculptured projections maximising the deck space. Aft of this is a quiet exterior deck area, which will offer fantastic views as the yacht cruises to exotic destinations.

There will be a distinguished air to the interior finish; marble accents, the antique fireplaces, luxurious baths, fine art throughout and classic colours provide a relaxed yet refined atmosphere. The five decks are joined by a spectacular set of circular stairs with polished stainless steel handrails and marble stair treads. The walls next to the stairs are covered in 18 karat gold-leafed panels in a wave-like rippled pattern.

With her new dramatic profile, sophisticated interior, gracefully curved deck extensions offering comfortable places to enjoy the view and her high gloss, midnight blue hull, Attessa IV will be a stunning new superyacht, fit for cruising the world’s oceans in style. She is scheduled to be unveiled in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on the 1 October 2010.
