Captain Jim Bell of M/Y Santa Maria talks about his refit experience with Absolute Boat Care at STP Palma in early 2013, on board 33m classic yacht Iduna.

We undertook a refit that encompassed renovation of the teak deck, re-varnishing the rigs and, finally, painting the hull. This is not a specific product the crew uses; it was a four-month programme of very intensive work.

During this refit I found it easier to minimise the number of different contractors working on board, so it was important to have one contractor responsible for paint and varnish throughout, including antifouling and painting the rigs. The Absolute Boat Care management team as on hand as and when required and were and happy to work in conjunction with other contractors to keep the project moving ahead with a minimum of fuss.

I have used Absolute Boat Care in the past and have always been happy with the quality of work, the level of service provided and the flexibility in the way the company approaches each project.

The Iduna refit was done on time, and on budget. The painting of the hull, which required corrosion treatment inside the bulwarks and a fair amount of re-fairing due to old filler failing, was by necessity only started after the majority of the work on the teak deck was done. This meant that there was a time-frame issue that could have arisen if Absolute Boat Care had any issues or if there was any sort of problem. In the end, however, there was nothing to worry about and the boat was launched on time and looking very, very nice. The owner was happy with the result and the positive comments we received all throughout last season as we cruised Croatia, and continually since, are testament to a job well done.

Time will be the ultimate judge of application quality, however the Awlgrip product that was used has a very good track record and so is not expected to have issues in the near future.
