Under the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC), it’s mandatory for every crewmember on a commercially registered superyacht to have a Seafarer Employment Agreement (SEA). Of the 1,000-plus of you who took our Superyacht Golden Ticket crew survey, 64.9 per cent of you told us you have a SEA. 16.9 per cent of you have an unofficial signed contract, 11.5 per cent have a verbal contract and 6.7 per cent of you have no contract at all.

Of those of you with no contracts whatsoever, 80 percent work on private yachts, although more crew on private yachts than motoryachts have an unofficial signed contract.

Of those of you on charter yachts, 18.7 per cent of you do not have a SEA as required by law.

Of course, having a SEA is only compulsory for those of you on charter yachts. But your answers told us that more of you on private yachts have a SEA than those of you on charter yachts. In fact, of those of you on charter yachts, 18.7 per cent of you do not have a SEA as required by law. Yet 56.2 per cent of those of you on private yachts, who are not required to have a SEA, do have one.

So who is most likely to have a SEA? ETOs and AV/IT engineers, you get the trophy, come first. The second most likely person to have a SEA are you bosuns, followed by junior stews. Unfortunately for deckhands, you’re least likely to have a SEA. What’s worrying is that this is followed by captains, and then junior engineers.
