WhisperPower and Diesel Center announce strategic cooperation

Hybrid research meets an extensive consumer base. WhisperPower and Diesel Center are set to unleash their "new school" system later this year.…

Hybrid technology and extraneous noise limitation go hand in hand. By limiting your reliance on traditional power sources it is possible to get closer to both. WhisperPower and Diesel Center - a leading propulsion engine distributor in Italy and exclusive partner of MTU - have entered into a strategic cooperation in relation to intelligent hybrid technology based power and propulsion systems for superyachts from 30-60m.

This strategic cooperation takes the form of an extensive research and development program, the result of which – by current estimations – should be available to Italian and international customers late this year. The new system has been created in anticipation of the increasing demands of owners to be provided with greener, quieter and cost efficient engine solutions.

One of the major features associated with these “new school” systems is a diesel-electric method of operation. This diesel-electric duality allows the loud, energy inefficient, high-performance main engines to be switched off in favour of small, fuel-efficient electrical propulsion motors integrated in the drive train. In “ECO mode” the electrical motors, with 70-130 kW capacities per shaft are operated by “super silent”, speed programmable, WhisperPower – Hy-Gen Genverters operating at 100-300 kW depending on the size of the vessel.

Whilst in ECO mode the vessels top speed will be reduced to 7-9 knots, a respectable speed for tranquil night travel or gentle cruising. The Hy-Gen Genverters – via a DC bus with integrated inverters - are also capable of running various on board power consumers such as galley equipment, washing machines, air conditioning, and manoeuvring devices such as stern and bow thrusters.

Using battery storage and a 20-60 kW three-phase inverter system yachts will be able to enter a “Silent Night Mode”. Silent mode will enable the operation of air conditioning systems throughout yachts without relying on running onboard generators or offshore power support.

“The combination of these two companies, Diesel Center and WhisperPower, brings together all the necessary resources to design, manufacture and distribute this extremely exciting new technology,” says WhisperPower CEO Roel ter Heide,  he continued. “WhisperPower is the world leader in integrated power and propulsion systems for mid-size yachts and already upholds both an impressive list of users and a proven position in the market.”

Diesel Center President Michele Maggi was equally optimistic when discussing the future of the strategic cooperation. “We are very happy with our new partner. WhisperPower is strong on the development and manufacturing side and Diesel Center is very well establish in the Italian and International markets for the supply of complete turnkey high class propulsion and control systems.”
