US Yard benefits from buoyant Australian market

Lazzara Yachts has just delivered the 24m 'Awol' to her Australian owner. The number of Australian billionaires is at a new high and US yards are tapping into the market to find owners...…

Awol is the latest yacht to be built in the US for an Australian owner.

The 24 metre yacht was built by Lazzara yachts and delivered to her owner a few days ago, before starting to charter in Queensland.

Jake DesVergers, Chief Surveyor at International Yacht Bureau (IYB), which has certified around 100 superyachts so far in 2011, told SuperyachtNews that Awol is indicative of a trend of Australian yacht owners heading to the US for their yachts.

“We have seen a significant increase in the number of Australian yacht owners in the US market," DesVergers said. "We attribute this to the favorable currency exchange. Awol is the most recent, but our survey office in Sydney is coordinating several new yachts being delivered from the US to Australia.”

A three-fold increase in the number of Australian superyacht owners since 2005 was reported in the Wall Street Journal earlier this year. WSJ revealed that the mining boom in Australia has contributed significantly to the wealth of Australians in that industry. Figures from Australian Superyachts—which advises potential buyers—shows Australian owners of superyachts now stands at 100, compared with 30 six years ago.

The buoyant Australian market is now being tapped into by US yards looking for new clients, said DesVergers. The Awol deal is suggestive of the new strategy:

“At the American Superyacht Forum 2011 it was discussed that there are a considerable number of underutilized yards in the US," DesVergers said. "They traditionally have targeted American clients, but are now seeking other sources, which is what we see Lazarra doing.”

Awol was also built for compliance with the Australia National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV). She has been certified by IYB as a commercial yacht under the Marshall Islands’ flag.  She begins charter operations in Queensland after an inaugural cruise through the Bahamas and will then be based in Australia.

Awol accommodates ten people and has a top speed of 29 knots
