The first tender belongs to one of the biggest launches of 2012, the 73m explorer Vitruvius by Perini Group. The second, for sale through Bluewater, will be used to chauffeur the Red Arrows team after their astonishing air display. Both tenders are excellent examples for the yard to hang its hat on for superyacht tender construction, having only built a 32 foot motoryacht tender for a classic yacht before.
“We’re now getting our foot in the tender market, we’re usually a custom builder for yachts. This is the first tender that’s been lifted on board a mothership. Monaco’s going to be a big show for us,” said Henry Ward at Cockwells in Cornwall.
Cockwells is known for its traditional boat building skills combined with advanced engineering. Its retro-meets-modern emphasis is evident on the Vitruvius tender, which is a beautiful, retro-styled tender built using lightweight composite technology in epoxy foam sandwich construction, external Awlgrip paint system and teak decking. The 9.5m was designed by Andrew Wolstenholme in collaboration with the Cockwells in-house design team and has several ‘high spec’ features. These include teak decking, seating for 12, wet bar, folding bimini, dive ladder, shower, and a carbon fibre electric toilet and basin.
The second, which Bluewater will be using to carry its VIPs, is built using the same mold as her sister tender, but at a lower spec. She is the only tender of the two for sale through Bluewater, and is nearing the end of her construction at the yard.
“Bluewater approached us to ask if we could lend them a tender for the show, we didn’t have one available so thought we’d build one for them. We had the moulds for Vitruvius, so we thought we’d go for it,” said Ward.
The 73m Vitruvius yacht tender will be on display at Cockwells stand, TS8, at the Monaco Yacht Show.
