Phase one of Hyatt Pier 66 renovation complete

Phase one of the $20m renovation project of Hyatt Pier 66 has been completed ahead of the start of FLIBS, with hopes that the final phase will be completed on time.…

As FLIBS rounds the corner, headway has been made in the renovation and upgrade to Hyatt Pier 66 marina with the completion of phase one of the two-phase $20m project. The new marina layout will accommodate 16 superyachts up to 150 feet and has the deep-water capacity to accept yachts in excess of 300 feet.

The scheduled date for the completion of phase two is 20 October, 10 days before the opening of the show. The yachts that are to be displayed at FLIBS will be the first to arrive at the new marina, moving in on 27 October.

The 127-slip, deep water marina will undergo a number of changes including new bulkheads by South Florida-based Shoreline Foundation and Eco Building Solutions as well as a new marinetek floating dock system, which will equal to more than 3,600 linear feet of parallel dockage and fixed docks.

Alongside this, the entire electrical infrastructure is being replaced with new power distribution, new dock pedestals and electrical capacity to include 480 volt 400-600 amp, three-phase power able to meet the needs of superyachts. On the Intracoastal Waterway will also be the addition of a new dockmaster’s office and a captain’s/crew clubroom.

Bob Saxon, president at International Yacht Collection told Superyachtnews.com, "the fact that the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is fully subscribed bodes well for the industry," and the Hyatt Pier 66 "gives us the opportunity to place some incredible inventory on display that would otherwise have been excluded, in a setting particularly conducive to selling."

Christian Bakewell, broker at Merle Wood & Associates added that it was much needed in order for the show to compete with the likes of MYS, "the expansion's major impact will be on allowing additional large yachts to take part in the show. And as yachts are only getting larger, in order for FLIBS to compete with a show like MYS, there is a definite need to include larger superyachts at America's premier brokerage event."

In a statement to the media, Kevin Quirk, vice president of marinas for LXR Luxury Marinas, which operates the marina commented, "the contractors working on this project bring years of marina construction experience and will deliver a state-of-the-art final product on schedule," adding that "the first phase of the project was delivered on time and we anticipate the same for the final phase of construction. We're really excited to begin welcoming our friends and clients back very soon."

Along with International Yacht Collection, exhibitors at the show at this new location include: Merle Wood & Associates, Fraser Yachts, Robert J. Cury & Associates, Woods & Associates Yachts Brokerage, Burger Boat Company, Chamberlain Yachts, Caterpillar Inc., Talbot Freeman and Edminston and Company.

FLIBS will be entering its 55th year, set to take place from October 30 to November 3 where you can visit The Superyacht Group team at Yachting Tent 624-625.
