The management of Singapore’s Marina at Keppel Bay have made a series of investments into their facilities over the past couple of years, demonstrating their confidence that Singapore can attract significant numbers of superyachts. The latest update has just been completed; two state-of-the-art piers designed and built by Bellingham marine have boosted the marina’s berthing capacity to 168, allowing them to cater to yachts up to 85m. John Spragg, General Manager of Bellingham Marine Singapore said, “It is an honour to be involved with this prestigious project, which has set the new standard for marinas in Asia.  We’ve built a strong relationship with Keppel and share a common commitment to offering yacht owners an experience at port that assures the greatest level of luxury.”

Marina at Keppel Bay is now equipped with a concrete floating pontoon system, a reticulated vacuum sewage pump out system, wifi, and individual advanced metering systems to monitor power and water usage. The largest berths have been fitted with 400A of power and there is now an on-pontoon customs office, as well as a dedicated fuel dock. It is the first marina in Asia to be awarded the 5 gold anchors rating from the Marina Industries Association Australia for excellence in facilities and services.

Trevor Fong, marina manager for Keppel Bay commented; “In recent years, we have seen an upward trend in the number of superyachts visiting Singapore, many of which are keen to explore the cruising grounds and islands around the South East Asian region.” According to the Superyacht Singapore Association, more than 80 superyachts visited Singapore in 2010 and more superyachts from all over the world are expected in 2011. Mr Fong partly attributes this increase in superyacht traffic to the opening of integrated luxury resorts along the coast, which attract a greater number of HNWI’s. This has been supported by the efforts of the Singapore Superyacht Association to co-ordinate the marketing of all the superyacht related businesses to attract greater numbers of vessels.

The SSY argue that Singapore needs to develop its marine infrastructure to support superyachts to maintain and hopefully increase the number of yachts visiting and choosing Singapore as a homeport and Marina at Keppel Bay’s new pontoons have strengthened this infrastructure. The Superyacht Singapore Association cite the development of comprehensive refit facilities catering for superyachts up to the largest size ranges, as the next necessary step for Singapore’s superyacht industry.
