Fire broke out on the 32m luxury vessel early Friday morning [at Fisherman's Terminal], causing more than $1m in damage, but no injuries.
The Safari Spirit, owned by a local cruise line, was reported on fire at about 1am. Two people were aboard the boat at the time, said John Gablehouse, acting deputy chief for the Seattle Fire Department. But the pair managed to get off the boat apparently without injuries.
The fast-spreading fire had fully engulfed the vessel by the time firefighters arrived. Crews were unable to board the boat to fight the fire because the flames had so weakened the structure, Gablehouse said.
Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other vessels.
A 14m response boat from Coast Guard Station Seattle was on the scene Friday morning to enforce a 180m safety zone around the terminal and help deploy a containment and absorbent boom to mitigate impact to the environment.
The blaze was the latest in a rash of boat fires around the region, including a blaze in Bellingham that took two lives. A sailboat caught fire at a Lake Union marina earlier this week, but no one was injured. A faulty shorepower chord was blamed in that incident.
