Palmarina makes case for Turquoise Riviera
Over the last couple of years, Turkey has come into its own as a superyacht destination. Charter-friendly and an escape from the overcrowded western Med, talk to many brokers and Turkey is not only one of the more popular charter destinations today but is also a popular cruising ground for many superyachts.
Keen to raise the profile of this up and coming yachting destination is Palmarina Bodrum, which held an exclusive evening at Virage during this week's Monaco Yacht Show to bring together key industry players to promote Bodrum as a destination worthy of visiting.
Explaining some of the marina's history, Levent Baktir, general manager for Palmarina Bodrum told the gathering that when the marina was purchased by a group of companies in May 2011 the plan was to create a "yacht marina like no other."
"Our observations have been that megayacht owners are preferring calmer, much more peaceful places," Baktir said. "We have added value to the region in a different segment and created our own identity."
With space for 69 superyachts of 40m+ to moor throughout the year, as well as technical services for 140 boats up to 45m and all the amenities you would expect from a first class marina, according to Baktir, Palmarina Bodrum is leading the way for the Turquoise Riviera.
One captain of a 50m at the event, who had been to Palmarina Bodrum twice on charters, told us that the facilities at the marina were excellent. For him, Turkey is somewhere special and the marina offers a safe, modern and attractive spot for superyachts to stay. Everyone at the event emphasised the undeniable importance of Turkey as a new destination for the superyacht industry, with more and more yachts being built in Turkey and more yachts heading there to cruise and charter.
