Limbo and loss on the Rocks
Comments
Its not so much the jetlag that screws you up, so much as communicating across time zones – in fact an amazing homeopathic pill called jet zone actually seems to have eliminated any jetlag for me between Seattle and Sydney. OK I woke up at 0400 this morning, but it did really feel like 0400 – a small if significant improvement. No, disorientation and dateline limbo comes through mailing, working and chatting back and forth across time zones until eventually you feel somehow stretched and dislocated or even drunk; 'drunk' though in the way water is, rather than as the result of too many beers (thanks to Douglas Adams for that concept).I arrived in Sydney at 0630 and was whisked North to Newcastle to visit Azzura's new facility (ex Sensation Yachts), where there was an unusual 93foot foil riding 40 knot yacht, Lady Barbaretta in refit (due to become an adjunct to Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island) and a 42m and 49m project yacht and support yacht raring to come off temporary credit crunch hold and get started. Azzura then popped me in a seaplane back to Sydney 30 minutes down compared to 2 1/2 car hours up. The only way to arrive in Sydney Harbour.
Back in the Rocks, the oldest part of Sydney, I wandered around trying to recapture the spirit of both the place and the girl I met there back in 1983, when here on a different and more musical tour. The Rocks of today seem somehow neater and somehow touristy (despite its age and authenticity). Maybe it’s the chi chi shops or the tourists, but like London's notorious Kings Cross area today, its somehow more sanitised safer and nicer than then. Despite that, my hotel (a listed or Heritage building) The Russell in the heart of the district is a real pleasure and joy and has free WiFi – other larger hotels take note!
Next a look around what Sydney offers the visiting superyacht and superyacht owner, with that usual Aussie suspect Richard Morris.
