Captain E. S. Geary is the only RICS Admiralty and Maritime Chartered Surveyor in the United Kingdom and Europe. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, The Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors, and the Institution of Diagnostic Engineers who have designated him a Life Member. His professional memberships include the American Society of Naval Engineers, the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and the American Arbitration Association - National Panellist in Admiralty. He was commissioned a Captain in the Venezuelan Navy and served as the Special Policy Advisor to the Commandant of the Venezuelan Coastguard. He retired as a Captain after serving as the Department Chief of the US Coast Guard Pan American Auxiliary liaison for South America and the Caribbean. A former director of the International Association of Marine Investigators and member of the American Association of Certified Fraud Examiners he is currently an authorised MLC-2006 and Code of Practice examiner for the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency. As a maritime consultant and expert witness for the US Department of the Treasury – Internal Revenue Service he has appeared in jurisdictions throughout the United States, the Caribbean and in Europe. He is the official Maritime Consultant for the Government of Mauritius and has acted for the Maritime Administration of Jamaica. Captain Geary has written a number of technical articles on valuation and surveys for The Superyacht Report. His investigation and findings of keel bolt failure that led to the loss of the Cheeki Rafiki exposed the negligence of the coding surveyor. In 2017 and 2018 he was named the Expert Witness of the Year. In 2017 at a presentation ceremony at Lloyd’s of London he received the IMC Lifetime Achievement Award in Admiralty and has been nominated for the RICS 2018 Pride in the Profession Award.
