In SuperyachtDesign Q14, industry representatives commented on whether or not technology ultimately enhances or detracts from the on-board experience for owners and guests. One such technology is the Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) system installed on board CRN’s 60m Darlings Danama, which its developers believe can make a positive difference.
The technology developed for the project, led by CRN in collaboration with Videoworks and the Marche Polytechnic University in Ancona, began in 2008 and was backed by EU funding. Although the technology itself is not new, it took more than 20 months to research and trial and is probably the first such system developed specifically for the marine industry.
“The main objective of the project was to understand the state of certain innovative technologies and to see what could be applied to the nautical sector,” says CRN megayacht sales director Luca Boldrini. “Noise control is already present in other fields, such as the automotive, aeronautical and public sectors. In superyachts, the use of this system is completely different: cabins are usually very quiet and noise-cancelling systems are not strictly necessary. However, they can provide that something extra that makes the owner feel more comfortable. In the case of Darlings Danama, the challenge was to create a noise-isolating cushion in the sleeping area of the master suite.”
Using two microphones fitted within the shoulders of the headboard, sound is captured in real time and converted from an analogue to digital signal. This is then analysed by a digital signal processor using a specially developed algorithm, which in turn creates a counter signal that is converted back into an analogue signal. This signal is then amplified and sent to a six-inch woofer that creates the disruptive sound waves to cancel incoming noise.
The system operates within a range of 20-200Hz, which covers the sound produced by engines, generators and the lower frequencies created by HVAC units. When activated, a clatter-free bubble is created within a radius of two metres of the microphones. However, Maurizio Minossi, technical director at Videoworks, explains that for frequencies above 200Hz, only traditional sound insulation will work. Although fully operational on Darlings Danama, the ANC system has been further developed for easier installation or retro-fitting.
“On Darlings Danama we used two microphones, but after further development we are now able to work with just a single microphone,” reveals Minossi. “This has to be close to the pillow in order to function properly, but the position of the woofer and electronics don’t matter [on the 60m, the woofer was installed on the port side of the room]. In fact, with our new single-box unit, now in production with our partner ASK, the system can even be installed in the ceiling.”
