Inspired by the ancient art of origami, the Folded Chair is the result of a collaboration between designers Enoc Armengol and Arnau Miquel, based in Spain. Originally presented to the market in 2008, the hand-made chair is constructed from a single three-millimetre sheet of stainless steel. “The inspiration came when my partner Arnau Miquel and I were thinking of how to create the thinnest chair possible,” explains Armengol. “We looked at the Japanese art of Origami and with the first conceptual sketches we did of the chair, we discovered that it had to follow the paper effect but wanted to create something that would push the limits of the design and material.”

Taking under two years to develop, the ergonomic shape of the Folded Chair has been created to impress but also be comfortable, with the option of having either a white or black leather finish. However, the Folded Chair is not the first product to be made out of metal under the Enoc Armengol name, as award-winning Armengol has also produced the aluminium constructed Thin Lamp. Inspired by Ron Arad’s Well Tempered Chair for Vitra in the 1980s, and the principle of less is more, Armengol explored the limits of the material, pushing it as far as he could. “The objective of the Thin Lamp, as the name suggests, was to search for the best thickness combination of aluminium to make it as thin as possible. When the material is folded or bent, there is greater resistance when using several layers as apposed to a single sheet. In other words, using two sheets of aluminium at 0.5mm is much stronger than a single sheet of 1mm.”

Both products are limited editions and are delivered with a high-resolution copy of the original development sketches.
