What do Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Bugatti and Aston Martin have in common? The interiors of their automobiles are all sources of inspiration for the latest style of door from Cope-Schwartz Design, the fine and familiar leather and lacquer finish being reminiscent of cool days cruising.

These doors are result from the combination of fine materials and excellent craftsmanship. Beginning with a fire-rated door leaf of 45mm made from 100% sustainable wood veneers of rare wood are then placed on either side. One side has American Burr Walnut while the other is covered in Birdseye Maple, these both have distinctive shades and characteristics reminiscent of the vehicle interiors they also adorn. Complementing the door leaf is a precision-made inner doorframe with an Ebony inlay along the outer edge of the door. These fine wooden veneers are given a lacquer polish, which is a multi-stage process following time honoured techniques transforming the untreated wood for a piano-type finish which brings out the grain of the wood and rich shades of brown. The polyester lacquer used is from Italy and specially blended on site. Once applied the climate is controlled as it dries this, in addition to the eight layers of polishing, results in a mirrored finish and a product that can maintain its form and function from minus 30 degrees up to 60 degrees Celsius. The end polish is thanks to fine hand finishing and making any compromises could result in imperfections in the doors.

The finest leather is sourced from Connolly Leather, which has a history of also supplying leather to the world’s finest automobile manufacturers and has earned The Royal Warrant. To ensure the leather is fitted with precision one of the UK’s best trimmers with over 100 years experience has been appointed to incorporate the leather into the door. The excellent fit and finish comes from combinations of hand and machine stitching, using the appropriate foam and attention to the measuring and installation process. The final detail for the doors are custom-made tubular latches designed to accommodate the placement of the door handles.

The end result is an elegant and solid wooden door that is not merely part of the furniture but a designer feature. Bill Schwartz says, “when people see these doors they gasp, wow!” This response is hardly surprising as it takes six companies to lovingly craft these show pieces.
