Decorex 2012

This year sees London's Decorex celebrates its 35th anniversary. SYD talks to a few of the exhibitors set to be at this year's event and asks what we can expect...…

Compared to design events like London Design Festival, now in its tenth year, or Clerkenwell Design Week, only three years old, Decorex is a veteran of the design world, celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Born into the punk era, Decorex has evolved into a targetted, high-end show that balances the luxurious, eccentric and eclectic work of traditional and modern designers. Running from 23 to 26 September at The Royal Hospital Chelsea in London, Decorex International features over 250 exhibiting companies across the realms of furniture, lighting, flooring, textiles and wallcoverings.

With so many design shows across Europe over the course of the year, event organisers all strive to establish unique programs and enlist special guests to entice international visitors and exhibitors. This year Decorex has recruited several of the biggest names in design to create exciting features for the show and will be looking back at its unique heritage. British designer star Dame Vivienne Westwood is set to design the entrance for the event. While famous for her quirky fashion designs, Westwood also creates wallpaper designs and most recently a collection of rugs and carpets for The Rug Company. Award-winning, internationally renowned designer Christopher Guy will also be creating a show feature. Inspired by Decorex’s show theme for 2012, his feature will honour iconic moments, key design pieces and the inspiring people and influences the industry has harnessed over the years. Decorex will also see interesting discussions and debates, and on 26 September at 13:30, SYD's very own editor Justin Ratcliffe will be chairing a discussion between the interior designers Graham Green of Keech Green Design and Kamini Ezralow of Ezralow Design. Both London-based designers specialise in residential projects, but they have each worked on award-winning superyachts, Heesen's Blind Date and Celestial Hope respectively, and will be discussing the differences and parallels between the two disciplines.

For many, the purpose of shows like Decorex is to meet new clients. Despite its close proximity to the dates of the Monaco Yacht Show, Decorex still attracts many superyacht designers looking for inspiration and new suppliers. Ruth Douglas, general manager at luxury linen manufacturer Heirlooms, tells SYD that the show has been extremely successful from a new client standpoint in the past. “We had a very successful Decorex in 2011,” she says. ”We were delighted to meet some new interior designers and architects that we had not previously worked with and we have subsequently completed two yacht projects that came from meetings at Decorex as well as several new high-end residential property projects.” Douglas emphasises that Decorex is an important event on the design calendar for them and 2012 will be the sixth year the company will exhibit there. “London is within easy reach for many international designers and with the very high level of innovative products on display, Decorex International is regarded as the premier international interior design show attracting the very best designers,” Ruth Douglas, general manager at Heirlooms, tell SYD. “A new stand design will enable us to accommodate our increase in space.”

For Luiza Marra, managing director at Colony, the show is not only a good way of attracting new clients but for presenting new collections. “Decorex seems a great platform to allow visitors to acquaint themselves with the latest offers from the best of interior design in a user friendly' environment,” she tells us. Other established brands attending the show this year include Colony, C&C Milano, Evitavonni, Altfield, Aigre Doux and Stark Carpets.

The show has also attracted fresh talent to its list this year. “Having attended Decorex many times as a visitor I am really excited to be showing as an exhibitor for the first time this year,” says artist Sophie Coryndon. “It's an opportunity to show alongside established names and catch the attention of new contacts whilst keeping up with old ones. Decorex has the advantage of not being too big whilst still being large enough to have something for everyone."
