With a higher concentration architects per square mile that anywhere else in the world, it would be difficult to find a more perfect location that London’s Clerkenwell district for a three day celebration of design, architecture and creativity. Opening 21 May and running until 23 May, the fourth edition of Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW) is once again ready to set the bar for design festivals and events, with its unique installations, inspirational exhibitors, cutting-edge creatives and world-famous designers all scattered around the historic buildings of Clerkenwell.

As a hub of architects, Clerkenwell is not easily surpassed. This year sees the opening to the public for the first time of the Zaha Hadid Design gallery. The award-winning Iraqi-British architect is the brain behind some of the world’s most exciting structures, including buildings in China, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Italy and the UK. The gallery is a window into her work with an archive of never-before-seen models of two decades worth of her projects.

The conceptual installations that spread across Clerkenwell during the event always provide artistic food for thought, but one sculpture in particular that caught SuperyachtDesign’s eye this year was the stainless steel and brass piece by Giles Miller Studio at St Johns Gate. The studio specialises in the development of innovative surfaces and interior design projects. Their space at Covered, CDW’s latest pavilion focusing on surfaces, displayed a selection of their architectural surfaces, which use light reflection to create subtle and striking patterns. Having already worked with the likes of Harrods, Selfridges and the Ritz as well as on projects for London Fashion Week, it is clear that this studio has a lot to offer the world of high-end interior design.

There is always a plethora of interesting, high quality furniture design on display at CDW and this year was no different. A highlight for us was Louis Henri’s 2013 collection. Known for his bespoke designs and elegant luxury interiors, his 2013 collection is a capsule selection of the best of his designs. The real centre of the collection is the Shongololo bench, a walnut, acrylic and eel skin piece that would be a talking point in any space. Italian textile manufacturers C&C Milano can be found in the historic Order of St John church. Featured in the next issue of SYD, Q15, the Italian company is branching into the yacht market with its high-quality fabrics and is worth a look.

The creative buzz around the event, innovative designs and exhibitors made us all the more excited about June’s SuperyachtDESIGN Week at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. Events like this, that bring the design community together, are always stimulating and an event dedicated to the unique world of large yacht design promises to be particularly special.
