How do you transform a door from being simply a functional object into an interior design feature? This is the challenge that Bill Schwartz and the team at Solid Wooden Doors have set themselves. Bill describes the door as his “canvas” and to prove it he has created doors that recall the materials used inside luxury cars and tenders, the latest being the Riva door. The materials resonate with boat enthusiasts who love the romance of the teak and mahogany and ebony inlays that appears on vintage Rivas from the 1940s.
“It's a showpiece that represents our capability of transforming the ordinary door”, says Bill. “We also wanted to open our appeal to not only homes and hotels, but also to the yacht industry by providing a real wow factor based on the classic Riva boats. We are now in talks with a number of yacht companies, all of whom want to personalise the look, materials and design of doors for their yachts. As an example, one yacht interior design wants to use black embossed leather ostrich skin with black piano finish lacquer.”
