The Marine Coastguard Agency has issued a Marine Information Notice (MIN405 (M+F)), which clarifies the training required for all Masters and Deck Officers – including those of commercial and private yachts – using Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) as their means of navigation.

The new document specifies that all users are required to complete both generic and equipment specific training. It also outlines that the practice of ‘trickle down’ training is unacceptable.

Mark Broster is the Managing Director of ECDIS Ltd, which provides navigation training, purchasing, charting and consultation in ECDIS.

He says of the new legislation, “This is excellent news as the MCA have provided UK Mariners with the clarification they seek with regard to ECDIS training. As a training provider we pride ourselves on delivering the very best ECDIS training available and it is commendable to see that the MCA are upholding those standards by insisting on proper training. We know only too well the difficulty that ship-owners, managers and mariners are having in making sense of the plethora of legislation regarding ECDIS, and this document goes a long way in clarifying the position for UK flagged vessels.”

He continues, “This is a very positive thing for the safety of the industry as a whole. The majority of superyacht owners are very proactive about safety and training requirements but this Notice forces those who were previously cutting corners to save money to take the necessary steps to keep themselves and others safe. Put simply, there is no room for ambiguity anymore.”

This is the latest of a number of deck department changes that have been made, an issue previously reported on the Crew Report.com, part of The Yacht Report Group.
