If we learned anything from the rush of boat shows at the end of 2013, it was that the industry was planning on going full steam ahead into a positive New Year. In the first issue of 2014, Issue 11, The Superyacht Owner also hits the ground running.

The industry is full of people who like to take risks and dream big. Eric Merlin’s yachting journey, for example, started in 1999 when he built a turn-of-the-century paddleboat using just an antique postcard. Now the owner of a faithfully restored 41.5m minesweeper, he tells us about his first real labour of love, M/Y Emeraude. There are also the owners who dare to push the boundaries of design, like with Adrian Lee, owner of the Benetti M/Y Ocean Paradise. He tells us about how he avoided yachty clichés and designed one of the most surprising yacht interiors of last year. Then there is the driving force behind the hugely successful Porto Montenegro, Peter Munk, owner of M/Y Golden Eagle. He saw potential for this small Adriatic nation to become one of Europe’s superyacht hubs when it was nothing more than an old naval base.

Issue 11 sees The Superyacht Owner visit Porto Montenegro to see what makes this new hub tick, discovering that it offers more than just a place to berth, but instead is a real community and home port. The idea of a welcoming community is behind David V Johnson’s Oil Nut Bay development in the British Virgin Islands. We talk to the owner of M/Y Resolute about this new residential and superyacht paradise.

For those dreaming of adventure, we get into the mind of Harald Orneberg, an owner who shares the highlights of the last six years on board his sloop Carl Linné and we look at how you can have adventures with purpose by becoming a National Geographic-worthy producer with Marine Conservation Expeditions.

We also chat to industry experts like Alberto Amico about his experience in the refit market, Guillaume Roché of Sunrise Yachts on the ways to minimise this risk of warranty aggravation, Andy Young of Special Projects and Services on issues of security and designer Andrew Langton and Kai Dittmar of Metrica about the role of the specialist outfitter in yacht design. Finally, The Superyacht Owner asks whether we could be doing more to quantify a yachts value before putting it up for sale and attempts to shed some light on the greyer areas of the dismissal process.

The magazine itself will land this week but members can already read the issue online here. To become a member and receive all future issues of The Superyacht Owner, click here.
