Based Upon Surfaces create unique hand-made finishes using liquid metals, resins and lacquers. Their work ranges from one-off furniture and sculptural pieces to large surface decoration, applied within interior and architectural projects. Having worked on a number of yachts built over the last couple of years including Celestial Hope, and Blind Date, as well as working with the likes of Terence Disdale, Michael Leach, Reymond Langton, Donald Starkey, Keech Green and Intarya, the company have  now built up a portfolio to showcase their work.

Their handmade textured finishes can be specified by a designer for application to any object or feature. Their process works with most metals, mixing them like paints to create a range of alloys and blends to produce bespoke surfaces that will compliment an existing scheme. The surfaces have the quality of metal in the way that they reflect light, patinate and wear, but they are much lighter as they are only applied as a fine skin, meaning weight restrictions are not a problem. Layers of the metal can be worked by hand to reveal layers beneath, resulting in some impressive effects.

Their work on Heesen and Intarya’s Celestial Hope involved creating a falling leaf-scape in tones of platinum that traversed all three stories of the boat. On Heesen and Keech Green’s Blind Date, a glimmering seascape wraps itself around the interior face of a three-storey spiral staircase.

Based Upon is currently working on composed decorative surfaces and artworks for a number of superyachts being built around the world.
