Atlas Marine Systems have become involved in the effort to mitigate the environmental damage caused by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Atlas has worked with Overing Yacht Design in Ocean Springs Mississipi, providing electrical system design for a fleet of 40ft shallow draft oil spill recovery vessels.  Atlas provided motor control design for the oil collection devices and the offloading pumps used on these vessels.  These vessels are designed for use in the waters very close to the shore and behind barrier islands.  The first of the fleet was launched by Connie Moran, the mayor of Ocean Springs, and was put into service on July 16, 2010.

Atlas Marine are not the only company dabbling in the commercial sector, Trinity have returned to their commercial roots with an order for 16 30ft oil skimming vessels under construction for the state of Mississippi.  The strategies of these two companies is indicative of a wider trend of diversification across the superyacht industry to compensate for the dearth of new orders in the wake of the recession.  For more information on the adaptations many shipyards have made to their business models reference the article in Issue 117 of The Yacht Report or visit Synfo.com.
