Tai Ping, a manufacturer of luxury custom carpets, announced its latest collection by designer and founder of AFSO, Andre Fu, earlier this month at One Mayfair, London. The specialist carpet company has often sought European designers for its collections but with this new line, a more Eastern inspired look and feel was desired.
Acclaimed to be the face of Asian design, Fu set out to create something that would incorporate the professional craftsmanship and historical elements of Tai Ping, drawing inspiration for the collection on a visit to one of its mills in Hong Kong. “It’s a re-invention of the long established artisanship of Tai Ping’s heritage,” explains Fu. The new line combines a variety of complex techniques, pile heights and yarn thicknesses with luxury fibres such as silk, cashmere and wool. “Subtle references to modern Asian cityscape and traditional tweed highlight Fu’s appreciation for artisanship, heritage and fashion,” says Tai Ping. “The resulting collection celebrates contemporary Asian luxury with a sophisticated line of textiles for the floor. It’s calming, elegant, yet emotional and sensuous–a sensitivity that remains true to Fu’s signature design language.”
The collection consists of seven rug designs, which are available in 28 colour variations and to compliment the line, silk pile rugs, inspired by Chinese calligraphy, have been conceived using original brush-stroke patterns.
Fu has also worked on a number of projects across Europe and Asia within hospitality, residential and lifestyle fields. The international designer’s most recent work includes the Upper House Hotel in Hong Kong, where he managed to blend the traditional elements of the interior with a new Asian modernity.
