Designed as a navigational device for amateur sailors, iSailor also works as a subsidiary platform on board superyachts. Captains and crew are able to check courses and AIS information in comfort and beyond the bridge's GPS system without having to purchase expensive software. iSailor provides clear presentation of navigation information, electronic charts and additional content.
iSailor uses a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi and cellular data provided by the device's Android Location Provider or Apple Location Services and utilises Transas’ TX-97 vector chart format. Current chart folios include the coastal and offshore waters of North America, Latin and South America, Europe, Africa, Middle East, Far East, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Purchased chart folios include a year’s subscription to chart updates.
A current problem with the iSailor system is that subscribers are not able to transfer subscription information and charts from Apple devices to Android devices and vice versa. This is not a problem related solely to iSailor, the issue stems from the incompatibility of the AppStore and Google Play stores. However, Transas is engaged in an on-going pursuit to make this possible and provide a multiplatform system. Transas hopes to make iSailor a multiplatform system by late 2015.
